Building Capacity for Ethno-Cultural Seniors

Building Capacity for Ethno-Cultural Seniors

Building Capacity of Ethno-cultural Seniors was a program that offered basic and intermediate computer classes to seniors of diverse cultural backgrounds to build in technology and social media platforms. The program also helped seniors to gain awareness about Canadian culture, Retirement and Pension programs, Banking in a Technological Era, and the Health Care System program in Canada.

Upon completion of this program, elderly adults were equipped with the knowledge of how to be involved in online community groups; accessing governmental health, community and banking services, and staying connected to people. By participating in this program the seniors became very much empowered to share their knowledge and expertise by delivering short presentations. In addition, they gained computer and networking skills.

Inter-generational connection was developed by having students coaching seniors in computer skills learning. Seniors were very happy to connect with other participants, received community support and decreased isolation.

This project was funded by the New Horizons for Seniors / Government of Canada.
