Aging Issues Presented in Short Plays
The project was designed to create awareness on aging issues as well as elder abuse by involving seniors in short drama theatre performances that were delivered for audiences from different age groups in different languages. These short plays highlighted: Financial Scams, Retirement, the Technological Gap and Depression that could occur based on health deterioration and some privileges loss.
The project also enhanced the values of volunteerism, mentorship, social participation and inclusion. It involved seniors and other age groups, not only within the theatre teams but also by way of the audience. They watched the theatre performances and participated in an open dialogue sharing their inputs after each play. They were provided with information and resources about the existing programs and services that they could access for elder abuse issues.
A total of sixteen plays/sessions were delivered to different seniors groups in different locations in Mississauga. These plays were done in English, Spanish, Urdu and Arabic. The plays are taped and are ready to be used as an educational tool about the journey of aging. MIAG recognizes the generous support from the New Horizons for Seniors program (NHFS).
